Khoury Khalil Hazar was around 90 years old when I was in Jdeida with my Mother and Brother.
The years were 1932 and 1933. I remember he could still read without his glasses. There was a court yard where the center of the house was located and there was a well. Khoury Khalil used to play tag with me and William and he chased us all over the court yard. He called me Soofeee.
The hotel had not been built yet. It was build between 1935 and World War II. On the street where the hotel is, Jiddo Habib had a general store. He sold canned goods and sundries. Across the street from the hotel, was the school that Khoury Khalil ran. William and I attended school there and learned to read and write Arabic. Our math teacher was also my Mother's teacher. She tried to give us English math but we were bored with that so we learned math in Arabic...

The Kingdom of Saba, a Yemenite state, enjoyed sovereignty from 850 BC to 37 AD
It was according to historians one of the richest kingdoms on account of its location.
Richly laden caravans passed through it on their way to and from India, the Persian Gulf, and Egypt. The sea routes were very dangerous.
Caravans arriving in Ma'rib, capital of Saba, continued on their way to Mecca, Petra, Gaza, Damascus and other places. The famous dam of Ma'rib by its very presence made life, and even a flourishing civilization possible.
But one year there was so much rain that the dam was carried away by the ensuing flood.
There are many legends about this great Catastrophe. The country was then exposed ,to drought and starvation.
The inhabitants emigrated seeking their living in less arid lands and so became scattered far and wide.
The proverb :"They were scattered like the people of Saba" refers to that exodus in history...

HILIGHTS OF THE HAMRA FAMILY
By Richard A. Hamra - 1979
Benu Ghassan immigrated to Hawran Syria from southeast Yemen in the latter part of the third century. In the fourth century, the Ghassani were Christianized and appointed Lords of all Syria by Emperor Justinian. This appointment resulted from the fact that Al-Harith Ibn Jabala conquered Mundhir of Hira in 528. In the following year, Justinian perceived the value of the Ghassanis as an outpost of Roman Empire and as opponents of the Persian dependency of Hira. Thus, Justinian recognized Harith Ibn Jbala as King of the Arabs and patrician of the Roman Empire.
The Ghassani Kingdom reached its height and extended to many areas. The great Orthodox Church of Antioch and all the East, Mother of all Christian denominations oriented toward Constantinople enjoyed imperial protection and became known as Melkite (Royalist). The term Melkite is used today for that fragment which, under Roman Catholic missionary influence in the 18th Century, split from the Orthodox mother church to follow Rome. The Melkite Catholic Church continues to use the Eastern Orthodox Church liturgy...

This introduction was prepared and illustrated by our great uncle the
Late Massaad Jeryis Al Hashem and translated from old Arabic notes he prepared during the founding of
"Al Jamiaa Al Hashemiya" in 1944 and were kept with our father the late Yousef Farah Al Hashem.
This family comes down from Hashem Bin Ataba Al Sahabi, who became a Moslem with "Alfath Al Islami".
He followed "Ali" in "Al Qadisiyyah" during the "Persian War" and lived in "Persia".
His Grandson " Hashem Al Ajami" who is the father of our family came to Lebanon and converted to Christianity.
The family took control of parts of Jubeil and Kisserwan...

Ben Ghasan, The Tribe of Ghasan, Our Forefathers, originally dwelt in the South Eastern part of Arabia in the year 200 A.D. The reason they were called Beni Ghasan is because a dam burst in part of Yemen, and they had to leave that country and come as immigrants to the Western part of Syria. They settled in the land of Houran (Haran, spelled in the Bible), which is located South of Damascus, Syria. They arrived west of Arabia, and camped around a spring of water called the Ghasan Spring-thus the name Beni Ghasan.
The Moslem historian used to call them the Christian Arab, and this goes back to the year 200 A.D. Therefore and according to Arabic historians, we have come from the Christian stock from the beginning of time, and we have kept our faith in spite of the Moslem invasion of the Middle East in 637 A.D...

Our Great grandfather Saleem was born around 1740 AD. he came to South Lebanon along with his brother Lobbos from Bkarkasha near the Holy Cedars of Bsherry as masters in manufacturing lime stone that was used to build houses, as cement today. Lobbos settled in Jezzeine, where the family continued to be Lobbos.
One of the brothers or cousins of Saleem settled in Debeyeh; he had a very nice garden so his family was called Boustany, meaning gardener. Saleem settled in Jdeidet Marjeyoun, married to a lady from Jbara family, where their son Deeb, means "wolf" was born.
Saleem was killed during his travel to his town in a heroic way, so Deeb stayed with his mother in Marjeyoun and the family started to grow...
